Midnight Token Guide

NIGHT Token & DUST Explained

Learn how Midnight separates its native token NIGHT from the shielded network resource DUST — and how the two work together.

NIGHT and DUST have different roles. NIGHT is Midnight’s unshielded native and governance token. Registered NIGHT generates DUST, a shielded and non-transferable network resource used to pay for transactions and smart-contract execution. Using DUST does not consume the underlying NIGHT.

NIGHT vs. DUST

Feature NIGHT DUST
What is it? Native utility & governance token Network resource
Privacy Unshielded / transparent Shielded
Transferable? Yes No
Tradable? Yes No
Main purpose Generate DUST, governance & future network incentives Transactions & smart-contract execution
Consumed by transactions? No Yes
Can capacity recover after use? Yes, while eligible NIGHT remains registered
Staking currently available? No Not applicable

The Token

What Is NIGHT?

NIGHT is the unshielded native and governance token of the Midnight Network. Unlike DUST, NIGHT is transferable and transparent.

Its core current utility is generating DUST. Midnight’s tokenomics also define future roles for NIGHT in decentralized governance and network incentives.

The Resource

What Is DUST?

DUST is a shielded, non-transferable network resource used for Midnight transactions and smart-contract execution.

DUST is not designed as a normal cryptocurrency or investment asset. It is generated from registered NIGHT and consumed when network resources are used.

Why Does Midnight Use Both NIGHT and DUST?

Midnight separates the capital asset from the resource used for network activity. This means users do not need to spend NIGHT itself every time they execute a transaction.

NIGHT

Capital & Governance Layer

NIGHT remains the underlying token while providing access to network capacity through DUST generation.

DUST

Operational Resource

DUST powers transactions while keeping network-resource metadata shielded.

How Does NIGHT Generate DUST?

01

Hold NIGHT

NIGHT remains under the holder’s control.

02

Register NIGHT

A NIGHT address is associated with a Midnight DUST address.

03

DUST Accrues

DUST increases linearly until the capacity supported by the registered NIGHT is reached.

04

Use & Regenerate

When DUST is consumed, eligible registered NIGHT continues generating DUST until capacity is restored.

DUST Capacity

1 NIGHT → Up to 5 DUST

Each registered NIGHT can support up to 5 DUST of maximum capacity. Full capacity is reached linearly over approximately seven days.

1 NIGHT up to 5 DUST
100 NIGHT up to 500 DUST
1,000 NIGHT up to 5,000 DUST

Important: These figures describe maximum DUST capacity. They are not an investment return, staking yield or transferable reward.

Do You Have to Lock NIGHT to Generate DUST?

No. Registering NIGHT for DUST generation does not transfer or lock the underlying NIGHT. The holder retains custody and can move the tokens.

NIGHT on Cardano vs. NIGHT on Midnight

NIGHT on Cardano

DUST Generator DApp

  • NIGHT remains in the Cardano wallet
  • Registration uses the non-custodial DUST Generator DApp
  • A Cardano transaction fee in ADA is required
  • DUST generation begins approximately 12 hours after registration

Midnight-Native NIGHT

Midnight-Compatible Wallet

  • Registration happens directly on Midnight
  • A Midnight DUST address is designated
  • DUST generation begins immediately after successful registration

What Happens If You Move Registered NIGHT?

The maximum DUST capacity is linked to the amount of eligible NIGHT associated with the registration.

If the backing NIGHT balance is reduced, the supported DUST capacity also falls. DUST above the newly supported level does not disappear immediately but decays linearly according to the protocol’s generation and decay mechanics.

What Happens When DUST Is Used?

DUST is consumed when paying for Midnight network activity. If eligible NIGHT remains registered, it continues generating DUST until the supported capacity is reached again.

Can You Buy or Transfer DUST?

No. DUST is not a transferable asset and cannot be purchased like a normal cryptocurrency. It is generated from registered NIGHT or can be supplied for a user’s activity through a sponsorship mechanism.

What Is DUST Sponsorship?

Midnight’s DUST model allows another party, such as a DApp operator, to provide the network resource needed for a user’s transaction.

This can allow users to interact with supported applications without personally holding NIGHT solely to obtain transaction capacity.

Can You Stake NIGHT?

No, not currently.

DUST generation should not be confused with staking. Generating DUST does not represent an investment return or protocol staking reward.

NIGHT & DUST FAQ

Does holding NIGHT automatically generate usable DUST?

NIGHT must be registered and associated with a Midnight DUST address before usable DUST begins accumulating.

How much DUST can 1 NIGHT generate?

One registered NIGHT can support up to 5 DUST of maximum capacity, reached linearly over approximately seven days.

Is NIGHT consumed when I use DUST?

No. DUST is consumed by network activity; the underlying NIGHT remains under the holder’s control.

Can I buy DUST?

No. DUST is non-transferable and cannot be purchased like a normal token.

Is generating DUST the same as staking NIGHT?

No. DUST generation provides network capacity and is not a staking yield or transferable token reward.
